What is water purification?
Water purification is a 5 step process in which sewage or any other type of contaminated water is purified and made usable for drinking and domestic use.
Water Purification
We should stop using desalination as a method to create fresh water. Water purification is a 5 step process in which sewage or any other type of contaminated water is purified and made usable for drinking and other domestic use. Currently in the U.S there are 16,000 water purification treatment plants. Water purification also proves to be more effective than desalination. Water purification eliminates 99.999% of all bacteria and harmful chemicals from water and does not affect our ocean ecosystem!
Even though water purification proves to be more effective than desalination there are still debates about whether or not water purification is better. These debates are caused by the yuck factor. The yuck factor is the action most people have when they think of purified water. This should not be like this though. Just because the water being purified is contaminated it does not mean the final product is like that though.
Desalination is known for taking sea water and evaporating it leaving a poisonous substance called brine. Brine is a powerful and super concentrated type of salt. While water purification does not create brine . Water purification may take sewage water but the water goes through more cleaning steps than desalination. Desalination might take the salt out of the sea water but does not guarantee it is cleaner than water purification.
Water purification ensures that the water is clean for us to drink with 5 steps. The first one is called ozonation consisting of creating ozone a powerful oxidant by exposing oxygen molecules to high voltage and then introducing a gaseous substance that is let have contact with oxygen and high voltage. Then the ozone is introduced and is left to make contact with the water killing germs that harm humans. After this process the water is transported to the biological activated carbon filters. By the time the ozone reaches the carbon filter it would have been consumed. In the carbon filters are good bacteria consume the left overs of the ozonation up to 30-50%.
The 3rd step is called membrane filtration. After the biological activated carbon filters the water is pushed through high pressure pumps to nutrition membranes which are made of hollow fibers which filter out bacteria. The 4th step is called reverse osmosis which is able to remove 99.9% of all contaminants in the water. This process is constantly being monitored to make sure all the bacteria and organics are being removed.
The last and final step is ultraviolet disinfection. When the water exits the reverse osmosis it is injected with a powerful disinfectant(UV light with 72 bolts.) When the water is injected with this 99.9999% of any kind of germs, bacteria, and or viruses are destroyed in one second. After this the water is so pure that nutrients have to be put back.
Water purification is better, more environmentally friendly, and safer than desalination. We should opt for water purification to have a brighter future! and don't forget desalination is bad, water purification is rad!
