What Is Desalination?
Desalination is the harmful process of taking the salt out of sea water to make it potable. However, this has harmful side effects that hurt our marine ecosystem and air. For example, the toxic substance called brine produced after the process of desalination acidifies the ocean making it warmer and saltier and also poisons marine animals.
Desalination is Harmful |
Some people are removing salt from ocean water, and it is costly to the creator's bank account and the environment, due to the grimy substance the machines produce. Science shows that the substance pumped out of the machines consists of chlorine, hydrogen peroxide, salt and other harmful things that are very harmful to the environment. This substance is called brine. When brine is pumped back into the ocean, it makes the water saltier and hot, making it uninhabitable
For these reasons, People need to boycott desalination systems because they do harmful things to the environment such as killing marine life and raising greenhouse gasses such as carbon dioxide and methane. These gasses cause global warming.
A nasty, gooey, grimy and chemical filled substance called brine is made after the process of desalination. The process of desalination goes like this. The salt is taken out of the water through a process called evaporation , then the water is filtered to check for any bacteria and or harmful substances and there you have it drinkable water. It does not end there brine is the final product and it is harmful to the environment, due to it being dumped back into our waters. This vile substance consists of hydrogen peroxide, salt, chlorine and even more horrible chemicals. 16,000 desalination plants discharge 142 million cubic meters of brine daily — 50% more than previously estimated; Enough in a year to cover Florida under a foot (30.5 cm) of brine, says author Dr Manzoor Qadir, Assistant Director of unu-inweh. For every gallon of water created, 1.5 gallons of brine is created. If an average desalination factory creates 20 million gallons of water a day, that is 30 million gallons of brine that is also created. Keep in mind that all of this brine is dumped right back into the ocean. The brine increases the ratio of salt to water, the creatures who live there find the water uninhabitable. The process of desalination also increases the water temperature further destroying the ecosystem. Do you really think that we should have this in our plentiful, California water?
Desalination uses heavy amounts of energy, it produces lots of greenhouse gasses and uses lots of cash.
Seawater desalination is one option for California, but it's the most expensive option and it has significant energy, greenhouse gas and marine life impacts. Desalination plants around the world consume more than 200 million kilowatt-hours each day, with energy costs an estimated 55 percent of plants’ total operation and maintenance costs, according to the world.org. 650,000 kilowatts can keep 46 average houses going per day. Desalination plants around the world use 200 million kilowatts a day. Back to the money side of things, desalination plants use 4.75$ per thousand gallons. An average desalination plant makes 20.000.000 gallons of water. That is 95,000 dollars per day, every day!
Brine acidifies our waters too much!
Brine causes ocean acidification, which makes our ocean water more salty. As a result of this horrible process, it kills life in the sea and it also makes the water warmer. Our water is just a shame to the people of California. We need to unite as a community and stop these money wasting, electricity hogging and just all around horrible facilities! All of us as a whole need to realize that we need to turn to water purification because it makes more pure, reliable water with no harmful final output! It could also be San Diego’s main water source by 2030. Elaborating on that, their facility makes the water so clean that they have to add minerals to it!
Desalination is destroying our environment! It dumps substance into the ocean that is harmful to ocean life, and it increases greenhouse gasses that warm the temperature of the earth! The impact this has on us is very severe, and if we don’t do something soon, we could see muggy oceans and closed beaches due to the toxicity of the water in our future. Always remember, Desalination is bad, water purification is rad!
